Well, well, well, there is definetly a lot of major sport happening worldwide. Table Tennis world champs continue, the NBA playoffs & NHL playoffs are drawing to a close & the French Open Tennis starts next Sunday. Now we have the finals of the Ice Hockey World Champs: man its raining championships!!
Anyway the best teams from round the world are battling out right now. Last night, the US team were knocked out by the Czechs & only today the favorite Canadians were bundled out by the Russians. Seems like the cold war all over again, but this time the Eastern Europeans have won! There has been mad hysteria this past week in many Nordic & European countries with people meeting up everywhere at Beer Gardens & watering holes to down some beers & follow the action.

No not the World Trade Center (even though there were a tonne of people at Ground Zero recently) – im talking about the World Table Tennis Championships. You know the game!? You played it when you were young in your basement with your mates in between marathon Mario Brothers sessions & stuffing yourself with candy. It is one of Hollywood’s unlikeliest pastimes, involves 2 people, a couple of vaguely S&M wooden paddles and a hollow plastic ball. Whisper it: ping-pong is cool.
Well Table Tennis (for the pros) is an Olympic sport, with world calibre champion athletes but for you & me, it’s still a damn fun game to play socially with your friends.
So I ask: Who’s Free for Table Tennis?
Forget scout halls & churches, the sport is hip again with celebs like Ed Norton, Matthew Broderick, the actress Susan Sarandon & rapper 50cent turning up bat in hand, at clubs all round the world wanting a hit!
This Table Tennis fervor is building towards this weekends start to the World Table Tennis Championships in Holland. The top players in the world will all be battling it out for 7 days, May 8-15, for bragging rights on who’s the fastest & of course who’s the world champion. Well, what can I say! Who’s Free came, saw & well kinda conquered! SXSW was insanely hectic & we got to talk to some great people about our app & yes we even made it on TV. CNN, Washington Post & NHK in Japan, where more than happy to see Who’s Free in action. See below for the Washington Post Vid & full article:
Of Course we also met some awesome fans, VIPs, other startups, with seemingly the whole SanFran startup scene having moved to Austin for the week!
Real cool!!
We also threw a Master of Geolocation Startup party with other awesome location based startups like Yobongo & Domo. As the Japanese earthquake & Tsunami had just occured, we also raised funds for the disaster relief.
In all it was a great week at SXSW: we even tried out the new iPad2 on release night…..& Who’s Free’d it!! :
So just a quick heads up to let you know that we are working on fixing a bug. Some of you may not be able to open or sign-in to the app, due to server overload.
We had a massive response at SXSW, with great media interviews with CNN, Washington Post & NHK. Due to this our server was overloaded. We are trying to fix this ASAP!
Its a great problem to have (as more of you are using Who’s Free), but it sux!

We dedicated the night to help save victims of the Japan earthquake & tsunami. Our CEO, JD, was a Japanese TV celebrity, lived there for over 10 years & LOVES Japan. So this was a cause dear to everyone’s heart.
We raised some much needed funds to save Japan on the night.
We, along with our great pals over at Domo, are joining together & helping a SXSW Save Japan Fundraising Night to help the earthquake & Tsunami victims of Japan.

‘WOW what a presentation!’ ‘You guys rocked it!’ ‘Killer app’ & ‘hands down BEST presentation!’
This we heard all night after we presented as a Finalist at the Vator Splash competition that looks for the best up & coming startup. The public vote is out & we were also voted No #1 by the public in views, comments & ratings in comparison to our competition.
With a buzzing audience of tech heads, app lovers, Angels, VC’s & startup enthusiasts we duked it out with 9 other early-stage startups to see who would come out champs!
CEO, JD blew the crowd out of the water with his ‘Dynamic’ presentation of the app. Coupled with the great response from those attending & the judges positive reaction, we were a seemingly hot crowd favorite!
We even had some local & international media crews interview us directly after hoping down from the stage. Below you can see a snap of when NHK TV Japan came across & interviewed JD.
Anyway, here’s how the Vator Splash comp worked:
- Welcome speeches, 1st 30min keynote, then the 1st 5 startups present (we presented in this bunch).
- 2nd 30min Keynote, then a 40 minute dinner break.
- Last 5 startups present, then the remaining attendees start to vote via SMS.
What was pointed out to us, was that many people left at the dinner break without getting to vote at all. Also the SMS vote system is open to manipulation by people not actually at the event. It wasn’t a true indication or snapshot of the 400 people who attended & heard the presentations. The voting process could be improved in the future, by allowing all who listened to the presentations to vote (before they leave).
Well, we came up short, but, there’s always next year!?…..next time the first 5 presenters need to tie down the attendees with ball & chains so they can cast their vote before they leave!

In any case, we’ve had a busy couple days being back in San Fran. We worked out our new mini-home: Rocket-Space. A brand new co-working space with a tonne of startups like us there.
SO now its off to New York & Social Media Week. That’s right: bagels, hot dogs & NYC pizza coupled with some great SM events across the city that never sleeps!
